The Mandatory Motorcycle Basic Course (PGS)
The practical basic course (PGS) is a central and mandatory part of the journey to your motorcycle license in Switzerland. You must complete this course within the first four months after your learner's permit is issued. It serves to provide you with the necessary safety and basic skills in handling a motorcycle.
The basic course is divided into three parts of 4 hours each and must be attended on different days. The order of the course parts must be strictly followed.
The 3 Parts of the Motorcycle Basic Course
🔧 Basic Course Part 1: The Foundation
The first part is all about the absolute foundation: vehicle control. On a safe, closed-off area, you will get to know your motorcycle from the ground up. You will practice the correct use of gas, clutch, and brake, ride slowly and stably in the track lane, master tight slalom courses, and train for the important emergency braking.
🚦 Basic Course Part 2: Into Traffic
After you have internalized the basics of vehicle control, we venture into light traffic in the second part. Here we simulate and practice everyday traffic situations including correct lane positioning, safely navigating intersections and roundabouts, and starting on a hill.
🏁 Basic Course Part 3: For Advanced Riders
The third and final part is dedicated to more demanding riding maneuvers and special traffic situations. A highlight is the training of correct cornering and visual technique in curves. You will also learn counter-steering, safe braking and swerving, and correct behavior when riding in a group.
Validity and Next Steps
After successfully completing all three course parts, the basic course is valid indefinitely. Your learner's permit will also be extended from 4 to 12 months, giving you enough time to optimally prepare for the practical test with private practice rides and additional riding lessons.
