The Motorcycle License Categories of Switzerland
You want to ride a motorcycle or scooter in Switzerland, but you are not sure which license category is the right one for you? We explain the differences between A1, A2 (officially "A restricted") and A (unrestricted).

🛵 Category A1: The Entry Level
The ideal entry into two-wheelers. From 15 years: mopeds up to 50cc/4kW/45 km/h. From 16 years: motorcycles up to 125cc/11kW. The complete basic course is mandatory. With a car license (Cat. B), no practical test is required.
🏍️ Category A2 (A restricted): The Middle Class
From age 18. Motorcycles up to 35 kW (48 hp) and max. 0.20 kW/kg. The most common entry class for adults. The complete basic course of 12 hours is required, followed by a practical test.
🏎️ Category A (unrestricted): The Premier Class
No power limitation. The path leads through A2 + two years of impeccable riding practice + another practical test. No direct entry since 2021.
